HERBAL TREATMENT: PAIN AND INFLAMMATION

For local inflammation and swelling, as in sprains and bruises:

Burdock root or leaves

Chickweed herb

Comfrey root or leaves

Ginger root

Marigold flowers

Marsh mallow root or leaves

Mullein leaves

Plantain leaves

St John’s Wort herb

Vervain leaves

Poultice, compress, ointment or oil of any of the above, alone or in combination: apply to affected area, renewing frequently

For muscular aches and pains caused by physical fatigue or sporting exertion, use aromatic/analgesic/antispasmodic/warming herbs such as Rosemary, Thyme, Peppermint, Cayenne, Cloves, Meadowsweet or Ginger. Prepare a poultice, compress, ointment or oil and apply to the affected areas — for best results use a hot rubbing oil and massage in well. Any one of these herbs can be used by itself or combined with any or all of the others as desired.

For lower back pain, use diuretic/antispasmodic/warming herbs:

1 part Celery seed

1 part Cleavers herb

2 parts Cramp Bark

2 parts Skullcap herb

2 parts Hop flowers

2 parts Valerian root

2 parts Marshmallow root

1 part Ginger root

Combined decoction and infusion: 1/2-l cup as required, not to exceed 3 cups per day

For internal treatment of neuralgic pain, severe cramp or physical discomfort:

2 parts Skullcap herb

1 part Hop flowers

1 part Valerian root

1 part Chamomile flowers

1 part Cramp Bark

1 part Vervain leaves

2 parts St John’s Wort herb

1 part Cayenne Pepper

Combined decoction and infusion: 1/2-1 cup as required, not to exceed 3 cups per day

For external treatment of neuralgic pain, muscular rheumatism, and aching back, etc.:

3 parts St John’s Wort herb

1 part Vervain leaves

1 part Mullein leaves

1 part Chamomile flowers

1 part Ginger root

Poultice, compress or oil: apply hot to affected areas, renewing frequently
